Award-winning Michigan author donates his collection to the Michigan Historical Society
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) — The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) has just received 7,000 books, courtesy of a prolific Michigan author and historian.
“The Historical Society of Michigan is the oldest cultural organization in the state, founded in 1828,” HSM officials said. “A not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, the Society focuses on publications, conferences, education, awards and recognition programs, and support for local history organizations to preserve and promote the rich history of the Michigan.”

Today, author Larry Massie and his wife, Priscilla, donated approximately 7,000 copies of books he’s written, including seven popular titles. The couple also made significant book donations to Portage’s two high schools and the South Haven Historical Society.
“I’ve enjoyed telling the story of Michigan’s past for decades,” Massie said. “Getting some of my books into the hands of the Michigan Historical Society will ensure that people in our state and beyond will have access to these stories for a long time to come.”
HSM Executive Director and CEO Larry J. Wagenaar said Massie’s donation will help with their most important mission.
“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of Larry Massie in sharing his work with HSM, which will help expand the reach of our mission to teach Michigan history,” Wagenaar said. “Larry has the ability to bring history to life in person and in the pages of his books, allowing him to continue to connect with people of all ages.”
